Veva Islas is a proven champion for Fresno's students and families, and a trusted leader shaped by the same community she serves. The first in her family to attend college, Veva earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Science from Fresno State and a Master's in Public Health from Loma Linda University. She founded and leads Cultiva La Salud, a Fresno nonprofit fighting for health equity so every family has a fair shot at a healthy life — work that led Governor Brown to appoint her to the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley board and Covered California's Health Benefit Exchange Board.
That same fighting spirit defines her leadership on the Fresno Unified School Board. As Board President, Veva has pushed back against developments that threaten our schools' funding and enrollment, and advocated for fairer pay for the district's lowest-paid staff.
