When Fresno Unified put forward Measure H, a $500 million bond aimed at fixing the district’s aging school facilities, Veva didn’t sit on the sidelines. In October 2024, she joined fellow trustee Andy Levine at a press conference at Norseman Elementary, standing alongside the Fresno Chamber of Commerce and the League of Women Voters to announce their support for the measure.

The need in Area 4 was hard to ignore. Under the district’s equity tool — which ranks schools by infrastructure condition — Norseman and Birney Elementary both ranked among the district’s top 10 highest-need schools. Other Area 4 campuses needed urgent ADA improvements: at Hidalgo, Veva pointed out that some portable classrooms had begun to sink, making it difficult for classroom doors to open and close properly.

Measure H represented $500 million toward addressing Fresno Unified’s needs — just a fraction of the district’s full $2.5 billion in facility needs — but a meaningful start. As criticism from opponents grew louder, Veva remained firm in her support. She stood up for families in the region that have real dreams for their children’s futures — dreams that better school facilities can help make possible.

That advocacy has translated directly into results for Area 4: the McLane High modernization, HVAC, and shade improvements at Scandinavian Middle, and the Ericson Elementary cafeteria rebuild are all part of the same commitment Veva brought to that press conference — investing in facilities so every student in Area 4 has a safe, modern place to learn.
